New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
