Several Injured as In-Flight Disturbance Hits Delta Plane Landing at Sydney
Several people sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines jet from LA to Sydney, Australia encountered rough air Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, a company official told. Four flight attendants sustained injuries.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service stated they assessed a total of five people, and transported three to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included pain in the back and head pain. The injured ranged from their thirties and seventies.
The event represents the newest example of aircraft being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with aviation specialists pointing out that global warming is a major factor.
The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the representative noted, clarifying that the plane landed "safely and normally" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.
Paramedics said they were alerted just three minutes prior to the plane touched down, and response teams were standing by on the runway.
The reasons turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and potentially more dangerous.

Data suggests that there are around thousands of instances of significant in-flight disturbance each year, out of a total of more than 35 million journeys that are conducted around the world.
Intense turbulence is defined as when the sudden jolts of a plane experiencing rough air masses generate greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - sufficient force to throw you from your seat if you weren't wearing a restraint.
As global warming alters weather patterns, specialists caution that air travel could become more turbulent: shifts in temperature and changing jet streams in the higher altitudes are likely to increase the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
