From Floored to Flawed – Is There Any Team Truly Desiring to Secure the Big Game During This Campaign?

No professional sports organization promotes equal footing like the NFL: it’s the entire brand. However, after 10 weeks of this season, this doesn't represent a landscape that is equally balanced among elite teams, poor performers, and average squads. It’s one where the majority of teams are merely adequate.

NFC Standings Definition

Within the National Football Conference, at least, we see clearer definition. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both at 7-2) look like the most balanced franchises in football, and delivered decisive victories on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties continue to possess among the most gifted lineups in the league, comparable to the Packers franchise (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense while managing internal staff conflicts, have demonstrated they're capable of dominating quality opponents. For all five, one can readily construct a championship trajectory.

AFC Confusion

Over in the AFC, championship race is thoroughly confusing. The current division frontrunners through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) and the Steelers (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Baltimore and Cincinnati are absent. The traditional powers, backed by elite NFL signal-callers, have either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.

Competitive Balance System

In some ways, this is exactly what the league wants. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Components of every squad pass the championship smell test, yet not completely. If someone requested to lock in your AFC Championship game picks right now, would you confidently pick any of the four division leaders?

Squad Examinations

Indianapolis Outlook

Beginning with the Colts, Daniel Jones hasn’t quite reached complete disaster level. However, recent performances have caused alarm. He's reverting to giving away possessions and failing against blitzes. He took seven sacks versus Atlanta on Sunday, and experienced a five-minute stretch where he delivered an interception and fumbled three times. This comes after he gave away possessions five separate times versus Pittsburgh.

The Colts’ offense excelled during early games as Jones prevented the disaster plays. Taylor along with the blockers mean the Colts are able to withstand periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. But Jones returning to his old blunder-prone days would terminate postseason aspirations.

New England Analysis

The Patriots seem fairly alike. Previously, they were league laughingstocks. Today, they stand as the league’s happiest surprise and the most successful franchise in football following seven consecutive victories. If not for committing turnover errors a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess nine wins, one loss with the top standing. Last season, they were old and slow. Currently they're young, fast and unafraid. Still, it’s hard to ignore the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the most manageable schedule across the NFL, yet vulnerabilities remain. Their quarterback has taken sacks thirty-five times – among the highest totals – and some of the shots he endured during the game were vicious. Over time, that punishment compounds.

Denver Broncos

Denver stands at eight wins similarly, and the perception remains as if they’re holding their breath. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, while the defensive unit provides the majority of the work. Lacking competent QB performance, Denver cannot intimidate anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering in the Western division with seven wins, but the injuries affecting their protection unit will present challenges for extended playoff success.

Steelers Examination

And then there’s Pittsburgh, surprisingly atop the AFC North despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defense too often disappears, and the QB's current constraints given his veteran status persistently appear. They’re 5–4 and holding on, yet Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson and facing easier opponents, are on a three-game win streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that Baltimore has closed the gap to just one game, but how rapidly this occurred is an indictment of Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. That the Ravens started losing five of six yet still appear they should win the division speaks volumes regarding the entire AFC.

Established Contenders

Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the greatest concern in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They’re the No One Wants To See ‘Em teams, but the Chiefs and Bills cannot get out of their own way.

Buffalo Analysis

Previously, the Bills felt confident after beating the Chiefs. This weekend they encountered a particularly discouraging setback this year. They didn't merely fall versus the Dolphins; they suffered humiliation, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in over three years.
