The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
